The Risnjak National park is located in Gorski kotar and it was founded in 1953. Today, it covers a total area of 6350 m. The Risnjak National park extends from the peak Risnjak at an altitude of 1528 m to the Kupa Valley at 290 m above sea level. The source of the river Kupa and the richness of its forests is the fundamental natural phenomenon of this national park.
National park Risnjak is home to 3 big European beasts - bears, lynx and wolves. Risnjak is also home to numerous plant species, as many as 1148.
Certainly worth a visit are the visitor's centers - the Birth House of the River Kupa and the Gorski Kotar House of Knowledge.
The source of the river Kupa will enchant you with its turquoise - blue color. The Kupa Valley is also known as the "Wonderful Butterfly Valley".
